HTML comes first. Not because it is the easiest, but because it is the structure of everything. Before any styling, any logic, any interactivity — students need to understand how a web page is organized. HTML teaches document structure, semantic markup, and how browsers interpret content. It is the skeleton. You build the skeleton first.
CSS follows next. Now that students know the structure, they learn how to style it. Layouts, colors, fonts, responsive behavior — CSS is where design meets code. Critically, students who go through this phase deeply understand why a layout breaks, not just that it does.
JavaScript comes next. This is where the page comes alive. Logic, events, functions, and DOM manipulation — JavaScript is the most intellectually demanding part of Phase 1, and it is introduced only after students have a solid footing in structure and styling. The sequence is not accidental. It mirrors how the browser itself processes a page.
jQuery builds on JavaScript, giving students their first taste of working with a library. At this point, they already understand enough to appreciate what jQuery abstracts away — and to know what it is doing behind the scenes.
Phase 1 closes with something every student can point to with genuine pride — a fully functional website or game that they planned, built, and debugged from the ground up. That project is the first real entry in their portfolio.
Bootstrap is introduced last after students have completed their projects. By this point, students understand exactly what Bootstrap is abstracting. It stops being a magic box and becomes what it should be: a productivity tool.

Why We Don’t Teach Bootstrap or React Until Students Are Ready
Let us address the elephant in the room directly.
It is one of the most common questions we get for our coding bootcamp: “Why start with HTML? Isn’t that basic? Why not just teach Bootstrap from the beginning?”
Fair question. But it reflects a misunderstanding of what learning is actually for.
Bootstrap is powerful—but without a solid grasp of CSS, students can’t customize, troubleshoot, or go beyond its defaults. They can use it, but they can’t think beyond it.
React follows the same pattern. It abstracts JavaScript, but it doesn’t replace it. Without understanding core concepts like scope, closures, and async behavior, debugging becomes guesswork—and things will break.
Skip the fundamentals, and the gap shows in real-world work.
So we don’t rush it. Bootstrap and React come later—when students can already build without them. At that point, these tools don’t create capability; they amplify it.
Why Learning to Code Still Matters — Even When AI Can Build Websites
Yes, AI can generate a functional website in minutes. Yes, ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot can write working code. So does learning to code still matter?
Not just yes. Fundamentals matter more now than they did five years ago.
AI generates output. It does not generate understanding. A student who cannot read code cannot evaluate whether the AI’s output is correct, secure, or efficient. They are entirely dependent on automation, which they cannot verify.
Stack Overflow’s Developer Survey found that the biggest frustration with AI — cited by 66% of developers — is dealing with solutions that are “almost right, but not quite,” leading directly to the second-biggest frustration: debugging AI-generated code takes longer than expected. These are professional developers with years of experience. Now imagine a student who was handed those same tools before they understood the fundamentals.
